Resolve overlapping time entries automatically

When you add or edit time entries, Clockodo now detects overlaps with existing entries and resolves them automatically on request. Your time tracking stays clean without you having to trim existing entries by hand first.

If you prefer not to use the new feature due to your company’s internal processes, you can disable it in the company settings under “Customer and project time tracking”.

The everyday problem with overlapping entries

Overlaps happen faster than you'd think. A forgotten clock keeps running, an entry gets moved later, or a break needs to be added after the fact. Until now, you had to manually shorten or delete the affected entries before the new time range would fit cleanly.

How the new resolution works

As soon as a new or edited time entry overlaps with existing ones, Clockodo automatically opens the dialog “Resolve overlaps?”. Inside it you see a two-column day view: your new or edited entry on the left, the current state with the highlighted overlap on the right. That makes it easy to see at a glance which entries are affected.

The dialog offers three options. Choose “Resolve overlaps” and Clockodo handles the cleanup for you, automatically shortening or removing the affected entries. Choose “Save with overlaps” and the new entry is created while the existing ones stay untouched. “Cancel” closes the dialog without changing anything.

Note: When shortening an entry, the recorded project time for the shortened period will be retroactively deleted. Therefore, please review each adjustment carefully. Working hours for the co-worker reports will not be counted twice, even if there are overlaps.

Dialog resolve overlaps

The same when editing entries

The same dialog appears when you move or extend an existing entry into another one. Conflicts become visible not only when you add an entry, but with every later correction as well. That makes tidying up your time overview noticeably easier, because you can adjust a single entry and clean up its surroundings in one step.

This is especially helpful when slotting entries into the right time range after the fact. Instead of opening several existing entries one after another, you immediately see which areas overlap and confirm the resolution with a single click.

When the dialog appears

Settings overlapping entries

The new resolution kicks in for every company account in which the setting “Allow overlapping entries” in the company settings under “Customer and project time tracking” isn't activated. With that option on, overlaps remain allowed without prompting and the dialog doesn't appear.

Clockodo deliberately leaves running entries out of the resolution. A clock that is currently running won't be shortened automatically, even if the new entry extends into that running time range.

With the new overlap resolution, you keep your time tracking clean without detours and correct entries in a single step.
